He is the heir to the oldest British throne in history, but Prince Charles is in no hurry to be king.

Charles – who has worked in public life to support his mother, Queen Elizabeth, for five decades – only talks about "if I succeed, not when. The estate, of course, only happens when his 92-year-old mother dies.

Charles is celebrating his 70th birthday today – a milestone event will be marked by an evening hosted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace tonight. The anniversary was celebrated on Tuesday with two new portraits of his sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, as well as a series of new stamps.

At the heart of his public work is Prince's Trust, the organization he created 42 years ago with his $ 10,000 Royal Navy severance package. Since then, he has helped more than 900,000 young people find jobs, education and training.

"He's as passionate about the Trust as it was when he started," says Milburn. "I see absolutely no sign of slowing down at all."

Dickie Arbiter, former royal staff member, said: "The Prince of Wales did not have a designated job. He created one with the creation of Prince's Trust. He is interested in architecture and the environment and has created charitable works in their image. He has a pretty complete role in life. "
