The Heritage Auctions auction will begin on November 1 and coincide with the 50th anniversary of Armstrong's Apollo 11 mission.

The process of preserving the vast Armstrong collection began two years ago when his sons Mark and Rick Armstrong examined the items left behind by their parents and discovered that many of them were beginning to show their age.
"The photos were seriously curled and deteriorating, we had coins and medallions that oxidized and some of the materials in which they were stored broke down," Armstrong said.
The Armstrong Collection is not the first space collection sold by Heritage Auctions. The company has organized auctions for more than 20 astronauts and their families.
