Collectors will have the opportunity to own a piece of American history when 3000 items from Neil Armstrong's personal collection, the first man to walk on the moon, will be auctioned next month.
The Heritage Auctions auction will begin November 1st and coincide with the 50th anniversary of Armstrong's Apollo 11 mission.
"We hope this will help remind people of what this country did in the 1960s. It was an incredible effort, "said Mark Armstrong, one of Neil Armstrong's sons. "We hope people will remember what we can achieve when we really work together and share a clear vision."
The Armstrong family's collection includes unpublished objects from his lunar landing, including wing pieces and a Wright brothers flight propeller in 1903, which Armstrong brought with him to the moon. It also contains articles from his childhood, such as his scout cap and a letter that he wrote to the Easter Bunny.
The process of preserving Armstrong's vast collection began two years ago, when his sons Mark and Rick Armstrong examined objects left by their parents and discovered that many of them were beginning to show their age.
"The photos were considerably curled and deteriorated. We had coins and medallions that oxidized and some of the materials in which they were stored broke down, "Armstrong said.
The Armstrong Collection is not the first space collection sold by Heritage Auctions. The company has organized auctions for more than 20 astronauts and their families.
"Of all astronauts, there is only one first man to walk on the moon, there is only one Neil Armstrong. It is the pinnacle of all the memories of space. It's not going better, "Greg Athan, president of Heritage Auctions, told CNN.
The Armstrongs met with Collectibles Authentication Guaranty to help encapsulate some of the items to be preserved in the long run before discussing with Heritage Auctions the sale of the items.
"It's a very special time and for the moment, we need everything in our power to feel good about being Americans, and having a piece of this story is part of that legacy. Said Kathleen Guzman, Executive Director of Heritage Auctions CNN.
The most expensive piece of the sale is an American silk flag that was worn on the moon in his personal kit. He has an opening offer of $ 75,000. One of Armstrong's flight suits starts at $ 30,000.
"A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to causes that are important to us and that we believe are important to our parents," said Mark Armstrong.
"We have often had people approach us and tell us how the landing on the moon inspired them. They come to Rick and me and tell us how they were inspired by success and how it made them want to be better, "said Mark Armstrong. "It's a very powerful thing. It is a pleasure to be part of something that elevates humanity. "
Heritage Auctions has scheduled three auctions for the collection: November 1 and 2, 2018; May 9 and 10, 2019; and November 2019.
