Probiotics and their popularity among fitness and health experts are increasing day by day. Probiotics can work wonders for your gut health, digestion and immunity. According to the results of a recent study, treatment with good bacteria widely used in probiotic supplements can strengthen bones, especially in women. The researchers are optimistic that the study could develop new methods of treating bone loss called osteoporosis. Healthy mice fed Lactobacillyus rhamnosus GG bugs (LGG) demonstrated an immune response that stimulated an increase in bone density.
The effect observed in young female mice is related to a metabolite called butyrate or butyric acid, a type of fatty acid produced by intestinal bacteria. This in turn activated bone-strengthening immune cells, including regulatory T cells, the researchers said. The study was published in the journal Immunity.
"The importance of the study is that probiotics are, at least in the mouse, an effective way to increase bone density," said Roberto Pacifici of Emory University to the states. -United.
"Our results will have to be validated by human studies," says Pacifici. "If successful, this research could justify the use of butyrate or probiotics as an innovative, safe and inexpensive treatment, aimed at optimizing skeletal development in young people and preventing osteoporosis in people older. "
Oral supplementation with LGG for four weeks increased bone formation in female mice by stimulating the growth of butyrate-producing intestinal bacteria, including Clostridia. Supplementation with LGG or butyrate induced the expansion of regulatory T cells in the intestine and bone marrow – the spongy tissue within some bones.
This led the bone marrow T cells to secrete a protein called Wnt10, known to be essential for bone development. In contrast, treatments that inhibited the expansion of regulatory T cells prevented LGG-induced bone formation and butyrate, the researchers explained.
Scientists have stated that the use of probiotics can be used in transplant medicine or in the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. More studies and clinical trials are needed to validate the efficacy of probiotics in humans.
