MIAMI – Publix has announced that starting next week, store employees will be allowed to wear well-groomed beards, canceling a long-standing dress code policy.
Employees have been using the grocery chain in Florida for years to change the policy. A Jacksonville worker even launched an online petition called "Beard!" which has collected more than 20,000 signatures. Experts said the change should help the company to recruit more workers in a tight labor market.
Publix had experienced the change by allowing some store workers to have facial hair in recent weeks.
The company-wide change, which will come into effect next Saturday, was announced to workers in a memo distributed this week. The new policy limits facial hair to 2 inches in length. Workers must also have a defined cheek and décolleté.
Employees preparing food should wear a beard guard.
