VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he was not joking by proposing to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to sign a peace treaty before the end of the year.
Russia and Japan are in conflict on a chain of Pacific islands and therefore have not yet officially put an end to the hostilities of World War II.
Sitting alongside Abe at an economic forum in the Russian Far East, Putin has proposed to conclude an unconditional peace treaty by the end of the year. Abe did not answer.
