Michigan State had its quarterback for the 2019 class. Now, Ohio State does.
Four-star quarterback Dwan Mathis "He's disengaged from Michigan State and has given a verbal commitment to the Buckeyes," he said on his personal Twitter account Sunday. The High School product from Oak Park (Michigan) was the only MSU commitment in the 2019 category.
The Mathis 6-foot-5 and 195-pound now fills the needs of the state of Ohio in the next round of recruitment.
"I want to thank msu for the many opportunities that they have given me to play in their university," wrote Mathis Sunday on Twitter. "The decision weighed heavily on my heart, I would like to announce that I am officially a Buckeye!"
Mathis is ranked as the country's No. 9 pro-style quarterback and the No. 6 overall prospect in Michigan. Nationally, 247Sports ranks him at No. 251 among all rookies of 2019. Mathis has imposed himself as a true double-threat player at the stand during a junior season that saw him Throw over 3000 yards and run over 700 yards, recording 26 total touchdowns along the way. Mathis led the Oak Park Knights to a 9-3 overall record in 2017.
Mathis first enlisted with MSU in September 2017. Previously, he was engaged in Matt Campbell's program at Iowa State.
Once Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes began to revolve around Mathis, he felt the need to reassure Spartan fans by tweeting on April 28: "Sure, there is a question, I am committed to 1000% towards MSU #GoGreen" . the message.
On June 5th, Mathis tweeted: "We had a great visit to MSU today #SpartanDawgs"
Mathis reported an offer from Buckeyes on Twitter on May 3rd. He traveled to the state of Ohio a few days after the offer, by Bucknuts, and made an official visit to Columbus, Ohio, last weekend.
Without Mathis, MSU's recruitment class in 2019 has 10 known engagements. The latest addition is a three-star athlete Tate Hallock of Forest Hills Central (Michigan), who gave his commitment to the Spartans on Friday.
Belleville (Michigan) half corner Julian Barnett remains the highest commitment of MSU at No. 54 at the national level. Barnett is also ranked # 7 at his post and # 3 in the state of Michigan.
Mathis was the second-highest ranked MSU class, an honor now owned by Spencer Brown, an offensive tackle from Walled Lake Western, Michigan, who ranks 470th overall and 43rd overall. The departure of Mathis leaves MSU with only a four-star player (Barnett) among his commitments.
Look for MSU to find a replacement for Mathis Square sooner rather than later, as he usually tries to sign a quarterback every cycle. The Spartans have inked three-star smugglers Theo Day and Rocky Lombardi the last two years.
Starter holder of MSU, Brian Lewerke, will be a junior redshirt in 2018.
