NORMAN, Oklahoma – Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray did not start Saturday's game against Baylor because he was late for a Friday practice at 7:30.

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said Murray was with his mother, who was in town Thursday night, and gave a false alarm. Riley said it was his policy not to be late for a Friday morning session.

Sophomore Austin Kendall started the first series before Murray came into the match on the second.

"It was not serious, it was not a big deal," Riley said. "Sometimes I'm wrong too, it happens, it was not too late, it was not serious."

After not starting, Murray featured one of the best quarterback performances in school history, while the Sooners, ranked sixth, baffled Baylor 66-33 .

Murray's first pass was actually touched. He then completed 17 of his 21 passes for 432 yards and five more to break Jason White's pass record (348.0 to 303.3). Murray also ran for 45 yards and another touchdown to join Baker Mayfield as the only quarterback in Oklahoma history to score seven touchdowns in a match. White and Mayfield won the Heisman Trophies. Murray arrived at the end of the week in fourth place of the ESPN Heisman watch.

"Of course, I was a little disappointed," said Murray, who said he set his alarm clock by accident an hour too late. "Personally, that can not happen.

"But I did not let him affect me."

Murray and the Sooners will face Texas next weekend in the Red River Showdown.
