WASHINGTON – Officials said a rabid raccoon attacked three people in the nation's capital before being captured.
News outlets quote a statement from the city's health department on Monday that the raccoon was targeting victims in the Chevy Chase neighborhood in northwestern Washington near the suburb of Chevy Chase in Maryland. Two pets were also exposed.
The specific nature of the attacks and exposure has not been specified. It is not known if anyone was bitten. People and pets have received preventive treatment.
The health department says the raccoon has been humanely euthanized.
In 2017, the Department of Health reported that northwestern Washington State had reported the most infected raccoons, particularly near Rock Creek Park. The neighborhood hunted by the rabid raccoon was about 800 meters from the park.
