In today's match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Manchester City star Raheem Sterling did something incredibly embarrassing when he missed a great stumbling opportunity. Fortunately for him, the referee followed this blunder with even more monumental failure by awarding a penalty to Sterling for the fall that he had himself inflicted.
This is really one of the worst decisions in arbitration:
Let's be clear: it was do not a dive. Sterling could not have wanted to intentionally pass such a good opportunity to score by looking for a penalty instead of a shot. Although he is a formidable and graceful player, he is known to become a klutz at the moment he gets caught. And not only has Sterling almost certainly fallen by accident, but after his fall, he did not even ask the referee to pronounce a penalty like many players seeking a bailout after missing a scoring opportunity.
Sterling is innocent of nothing but clumsiness, and the responsibility for it lies squarely on the official. The weight of shame that must be accumulated on the shoulders of the referee should be enough to sink him down to the surface of the court. Just look at this shit:
