OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Even though the Oakland Raiders had the feeling of letting out two winners, they may have stolen a game against the Cleveland Browns to spoil Baker Mayfield's early career.
Derek Carr led the scoring in the final seconds of regularity after the replay critic had a first win in Cleveland and the Raiders got their first win since Jon Gruden's return by beating the Browns 45-42 against the 29- Matt McCrane field goal in overtime on Sunday.
The Raiders (1-3) left their lead in the second half in each of the first three games and did not follow any of them for a single second in the first three quarters, before clearing the 14-point deficits and eight points to beat the Browns (1-2-1) and give Gruden his first win since 2008.
"We have not repaired anything yet," said Gruden. "We have a lot of things to improve, I think it's pretty obvious, we played good football during relays."
The Raiders had some ups and downs in the game, falling 28-14 in the third quarter before taking a 34-28 lead in the fourth, thanks in part to two Mayfield fumbles.
But the Browns responded with two more touchdowns and the Raiders seemed to have finished when Carr threw two consecutive unfinished ones on the 9 to reverse the ball with less than two minutes to play.
Carlos Hyde ran three times and appeared to have a first run that would have passed over the clock to overturn him when the officials decided that his elbow was touching the ground a stone's throw from the marker.
"I really thought we had the first try," said Hyde. "But they changed the call.We must get it immediately.If we want to win the match, we have to get it."
The Raiders took over at 47 with a time of 1:28 and Carr led a race that made him think of 2016, when he had seven returns in the fourth quarter. After failing to deliver late in the first three games of the season, Carr gave Jared Cook a 7-yard goal with 30 seconds to go before adding Jordy Nelson to a 2-point lead.
Carr finished with 437 passing yards and four touchdowns.
"The beginning of this year and half of this game was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do because it's frustrating," Carr said. "I feel better – physically, mentally, all these things I've ever had, but then I'm seeing something on the way, but I'll tell you that, one thing I just said and I'm not sure. I looked at our guys and said fight. "

Mayfield had 295 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start, but also had two interceptions and lost two fumbles. These turnarounds have prevented him from becoming the third out of 30 Browns QB to debut with the team since the return of the franchise in 1999.

The Raiders had to turn to their third kick this week when Mike Nugent was placed on IR with a hip injury after succeeding Eddy Pineiro. They turned to rookie McCrane, who was originally designated as a free agent this Wednesday by Arizona, after setting the Kansas State record in career FG. McCrane missed his first placement with 47 yards and 50 yards on OT's first ball before scoring the winning goal.
