OAKLAND – The Raiders will be looking for a long snapper this week.

Andrew DePaola suffered a knee injury early in the 33-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday.

They will review the options available for the future. In the moment, the Raiders turned to Lee Smith for help.

The tight end of the Raiders was the long emergency snapper and was called upon to intervene after the fall of DePaola.

Raiders fans have had nightmares of Travis Goethel fulfilling this role during the opening game of the 2012 season, with disastrous results. His endless battles put the Raiders in a dead end and contributed heavily to a loss to San Diego.

Smith did a lot better. There were no problems with the goals or the platforms on the field, although Smith sailed in one fell swoop, Johnny Townsend was able to do it.

Teammate Derek Carrier could say his teammate was in a difficult situation. He walked to Smith near the Raiders' bench, sat down and made a quick prayer. This refocused Smith and helped him keep the nerves at bay.

The Raiders will not have to take back Smith next week. They will sign someone from the street. Last year, Jon Condo set out for the Raiders and the team had other options at the camp this summer.

Penalties in abundance
