Sri Lanka's Petroleum Minister and World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga was arrested on Monday (October 29). He was swiftly produced before the Colombo magistrate and subsequently granted bail by the evening.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) arrested the Sri Lankan trainer skipper after his bodyguards opened fire in order to rescue him from a political confrontation outside the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) office. Reports in Sri Lankan media claim that they were struck with a bullet in their hospital Sunday night.

Consequently, the petroleum trade unions launched a strike on the death of the CPC employee and asked for the arrest of Ranatunga.

The shooting took place when Ranatunga arrives at the ministry and has a situation in which he is reported to be attempting to train the cricketer. The bodyguard who opened fire, a policeman, has also been arrested.
