The Rangers could not wait for the end of a bad season to abandon their manager.

Jeff Banister was sacked Friday, just over a week before the end of Texas' first consecutive losing season in 10 years.

The bench coach, Don Wakamatsu, will serve as interim manager for the rest of the season, starting with Friday night's game against the Mariners, who will kick off the season's home run. The Rangers announced the dismissal of Banister earlier in the day.

Banister, hired after the 2014 season, had a record of 325-313 in his first manager position. The Rangers have won AL West in each of their first two seasons, losing to Toronto in the AL playoff series twice.

The Rangers had a record of 64-88 at Friday night's game. They were 78-84 last year.

With six teams in the majors with even worse records than the Rangers, it seems likely that Banister's will be the first head to roll at the end of the season.

Then, Buck Showalter, the former manager of the Yankees and Rangers who has been with the Orioles since 2010. In the grip of a bad history season, the Orioles are waited to part with Showalter. But unlike the Rangers, they are supposed to wait until the end of the season.
