Ranking of 2018 college football seats: Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh takes the lead

It seems like the season is slow and silly … unless LSU, USC or – gulp – Ohio State is open, it may be that there are not any posts very much in sight of Power Five available this cycle. But give him time. This could change if the ever-changing winds and whims of the crazy-eyed boosters and their expectations.

As a fair and balanced update of CBS Sports annual hot seat ranking, we thought to review the list in season after a month of competition. As such, we are presenting six coaches from this comprehensive list of 129 whose safety has been on the rise since the summer … and six that are on the decline.

It is fair to say that some things have changed. Jim Harbaugh and Michigan are on a roll, while – five words you never thought you'd read – Urban Meyer kept his job. Rutgers seems to be the worst program in the country. Texas could be back. After a season of 10 wins, Notre Dame has never left. Bill Snyder and Kansas State had a difficult start. Colorado is undefeated so far in the season for the first time since 1995.

The reason for a lot of this: We are not worried about hurt feelings. Coaches earn millions of dollars to coach a game. It does not matter if the public examines their job performance from time to time.

A disclaimer because we have something that has not been exposed recently in university athletics – patience: we do not include Chip Kelly and Scott Frost (0-8 combined) because we have a soul. Let these guys finish a season first.

Before you know who is in place and who is down, a brief reminder of our evaluation key and what the numbers next to each coach's name represent in all things.

  • 5: Win or be fired
  • 4: Start improving yourself now
  • 3: The pressure is rising
  • 2: All is well … for the moment
