As we saw last year, the NBA City Edition uniforms are a way for Nike and the 30 teams to pay tribute to the state or region represented by the team. The City United allows teams to be very creative and think outside the box on their replacement uniforms.
We have already seen a great variety of united cities that are moving away from traditional appearances, and many of them have been very well received. Other? Not really. With this year's harvest starting to flow one by one in recent weeks, we will highlight them (and rank them) here.
Here are the uniforms that have been officially unveiled, ranked from worst to best.
(Note: Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs are not included in this list as they wear the same uniform from the previous season.)
28. Dallas Mavericks
I did not think it could be much worse than the Mavs City uniform last year, and yet we are there.
27. Phoenix Suns
For the second consecutive year, the Suns pay tribute to their Hispanic community in Arizona with their City look. For the second consecutive year, they made very boring and disappointing efforts.
26. Orlando Magic
The Magic basically took the City jersey last year and removed (or reduced) the best part – the sky pattern. It looks like a lazy, less attractive revival.
25. Indiana Pacers
I like the idea inspired by the race behind these ideas, but the execution is terrible – and not just because of my dislike for gray uniforms. This jersey is just ugly like hell. Plus, the jersey of the Grizzlies' City (a little further down this list) looks worse. It's a shame because the current primaries of the Pacers are among the most beautiful in the league. I can not win them all, I guess.
24. Charlotte Hornets
The colors of Hornet uniforms are the best. So it is quite disappointing not to have purple to harmonize with teal. This uniform is not terrible, but it's rather boring, not spectacular and safe. I think the purpose of the uniforms of the city is that the teams can really go out there and be creative, so I'm not a fan of this piece.
23. Philadelphia 76ers
I'm usually not a fan of gray uniforms and these inspired by "Rocky" may look like a tracksuit on the court. Overall, the minimalist design is rather solid … I would have liked only that they go with another basic color.
22. Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies have decided to use their City jerseys to pay homage to the rich history of the fight at Memphis. The "Main Event" jerseys use a gray steel base (yes, for steel chairs) and feature a pattern on the sides meant to mimic a championship wrestling belt. What I like most about the look is that the names are under the numbers on the back of the shirt, but overall they are not spectacular. They might be the best of the current Grizzlies series, though.
21. Detroit Pistons
It's the best "Motor City" that the Pistons have had so far, but it's also saying little. The running strips in the middle are pretty pretty, but I hate the fact that they have become black and silvery here. The red, white and blue color scheme of Detroit is excellent, so I wish they incorporated it here … or at least sent back to those weird 90s teal sweaters.
20. Boston Celtics
Looks like the Celtics have played really safe here. The gold trim looks great, but the green stripe on the neck and arms gives the jersey a slightly bland appearance. One has the impression that they would have been better to try to work in their usual striping. Overall, they are not terrible, but they are not excellent either
19. Atlanta Hawks
The bird feather pattern on the side of these plain is a unique and cool feature, but the rest of the jersey is not so exciting. The golden border celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Hawks' season, and it's certainly better than the neon line they usually trot.
18. Los Angeles Lakers
After using the City jersey from last year to pay tribute Kobe Bryant, the Lakers chose to use this year to honor another team legend in Magic Johnson. The idea is good, but the uniform, apparently designed by Magic itself, does not quite reach this classification. I like incorporating fine stripes to honor the commercial side of Magic, but the front appears a bit too busy with the entire "Los Angeles" symbol included in the Lakers wordmark. That being said, they could be better than the other purple Lakers jerseys this year.
17. Washington Wizards
"The District of Columbia" on the front is a rather hardassinous alternative to the typical Wizards wordmark on the front of their jerseys, and the Washington Monument on the side of the uniform is rather neat. But I hate that they have completely abandoned their red, white and blue color scheme to go with a boring alternating black. You could have used the usual color scheme as an accent somewhere. Instead, we have a uniform that disappoints disappointing its potential.
16. warriors of the state of the gold
The Warriors pay tribute to the Chinese community of the Bay Area with these uniforms. They did a good job incorporating many elements of the warrior uniforms of the past and present, while incorporating elements of Chinese culture. Overall, it is a beautiful uniform.
15. Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers have opted for an alternative "RipCity" as City's jersey for the second year in a row, but this year's version is a significant improvement over the latter. It sports the typical black and red of Portland, but mixes a little gray and gives an elegant and minimalist appearance to the Blazers' jersey belt. This is not a bold or daring alternative, but an elegant and solid look.
14. New York Knicks
Between the dark jersey and the un-arched wordmark, it does not really look like a Knicks jersey, even if it's a step back from what the wearer wore. team in the 1950s. However, it is clear that the line of horizon that passes on the side of the uniform is amazing. It's an old school look that brings a touch of advanced freshness. I dig it.
13. Chicago Bulls
The Bulls approached their City look with a minimalist approach and left with a rather surprising winner. The Chicago flag is great, so it's very cool to see them use it as the inspiration for the City jersey for the second year in a row. This interpretation is infinitely better than last year.
12. Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks have recently embraced the era of Mecca many times, especially with the design of the playground. I love the fact that it has served as inspiration to City United of this city. year. They did a great job creating a bold and unique replacement that inspired their story while bringing a slightly modern twist.
11. Toronto Raptors
The Raptors' City jersey this year is basically the same OVO collaboration that we saw last year, but with a white uniform instead of a black one. Black is a bit superior, but it's still a pretty, elegant and attractive jersey. The influence of Drake still reigns in Toronto.
10. Kings of Sacramento
The Kings will use a retro design almost identical to their City look last year, but the big change happens. Instead of using the team's alternative logo, they will wear the "Sactown" logo on the front of the jersey. This is an upgrade.
9. New Orleans Pelicans
Going with the Mardi Gras theme for jerseys in the city was a no-brainer, and the execution is very solid here. The jersey is vibrant, colorful and fun, it's exactly what you want in a Mardi Gras uniform. We must assume the hangover and regrets are sold separately.
8. Houston Rockets
Like the Warriors, the Rockets seize their Chinese market with their city 's uniform. Houston did the same thing last year, but the new version is a massive upgrade. Like, MASSIVE. The level of detail of this jersey is exceptional and the end result is fantastic. The color palette makes it a little more like a Cavs uniform to a Rockets unit, but it's a beauty no matter.
7. Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavs have opted for a bold city, which is far enough away from their current appearance. The look is inspired by many aspects of the city and the history of the franchise, which I like very much. The orange and blue colors reflect the colors of the team of the 1980s and 1990s, while the wave pattern evokes Lake Erie and the jersey that the team used in 1994 when it returned to downtown Cleveland. The wordmark of the city script is also a good idea. Overall, it's a very different and very cool uni for the Cavs.
6. Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers' City look is reminiscent of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, which coincided with the year of the inaugural Clippers season. The "LA" logo on the front of the jersey is a tribute to the Olympic logo of 1984, and the five stars that follow recall the uniforms worn by Team USA at these Games. The usual digit style of the clips does not seem to perfectly match the mood of the jersey, but otherwise, it's a great uniform.
5. Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets' skyline jerseys are always the best, so it's a shame they do not wear them full time. I am very happy to see the rainbow design come back with these City sweaters, which seem to be a modern interpretation of classic rainbows. I'm not too crazy about the navy blue collar and the lack of stripes on the arms, but overall, I like that a lot.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves
Like most people, I was extremely happy to learn that the Wolves were going to unveil a jersey inspired by "Purple Rain" in order to honor the late hero of his hometown, Prince. These jerseys are very good and will probably be very popular both in Minnesota and throughout the league, but they feel like they're not great and it's frustrating.
3. Thunder of Oklahoma City
The Thunder have the worst set of uniforms in the league and, frankly, it's pretty staggering that their main appearance has survived so long. That being said, it's the best jersey that the team has ever had. Not only is it gorgeous and vibrant, it is also the first turquoise NBA uniform to pay homage to Native American culture. That's the rule.
2. Brooklyn nets
The tributes of pop culture have clearly been a popular theme at City United this year, but the Nets have the best of the band. Honoring the great and famous Notorious B.I.G. with the Coogi pull pattern in the pad is a gesture so subtle but incredible that turns their typical primary uniforms a bit bland into works of art.
1. Miami Heat
The Heat had the biggest winner of the City Harvest last year and was smart enough not to spoil the success this year. They basically adopted the same concept as last year and put it on a black jersey instead of a white one, and the result is another winner. In fact, the black version could be even better given that the colors of the neon Vice are brighter. Now the only thing to do for the Heat is to make this set his primary full time.
