Rashida Tlaib, a 42-year-old Michigan Democrat, became the first Muslim woman elected to Congress on Tuesday.

Tlaib ran unopposed at Michigan's 13th Michigan home race, but resisted a last-minute challenge from a woman she beat at the August primary.

"The first thing I think about when someone says you're going to be the first Muslim is to celebrate that moment," Tlaib told CBS News.

"We changed the course of history at a time when we thought it was impossible. And that if you believe, believe in the possibility of someone like me.

The lawyer and former state legislator is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants.

Ilhan Omar, a 36-year-old Muslim who could win her race Tuesday night, could also join her.
