McManaman identifies a key failure
According to Steve McManaman, the failure of Real Madrid does not replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese have left the Spanish giants for Juventus this summer. Real has failed to replace his replacement.
And McManaman admitted to being stunned by this decision.
"Everyone was surprised, is not it?" McManaman told Reuters. "It took a lot of time to bring in new recruits. They did not bring anyone to replace Cristiano.
"It was a shock for everyone. I do not know if they could buy any of its quality. The fact that they did not bring in anyone and slow down business in the center-forward area surprised everyone. "
Ronaldo helped the club win four of the last five Champions League titles, providing class and goals when they needed it the most.
McManaman said Kylian Mbappe of 19-year-old Paris Saint-Germain, who was impressed by France's World Cup victory, would have been the ideal substitute.
"Of course, wanting someone and trying to buy it are two completely different things," said the 46-year-old, who has won two world championship and Spanish league titles at Real.
"He's an exceptional player, he's very young, so he has a long and successful career.
"It's impossible for PSG to sell somebody like Mbappe to a rival like Real Madrid."
