Rebel Wilson raised controversy last week by claiming that she was the first plus-size actress to play in a romantic comedy movie. She now seems to have blocked so many critics on this dubious comment to generate a hashtag #RebelWilsonBlockedMe.
The star of "Bridesmaids" appeared in "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on October 31 to discuss her new film, "Is not it romantic". She claimed she was the "first plus size girl to have been the star of a romantic comedy movie. In a tweet that has since received 16,000 "likes", a Twitter user has corrected it, referring to Queen Latifah and Mo-Nicique. Queen Latifah played in "The Last Holiday" in 2006 and "Just Wright" in 2010, while the Mo'Nique vehicle, "Phat Girlz," was released in 2006.
Wilson then earned further criticism by defending the comment on Twitter. "Yes, of course I know these movies, but you could wonder if: 1. Technically, these actresses were bigger when they were shooting or 2. Technically, these movies are classified / billed. [sic] as a rom-com studio with only one track, "she wrote.
Many on Twitter have accused Wilson of ignoring the achievements of black women and blocking them when they reported it. "The body of black women does not matter when it comes to white women like Rebel Wilson," said one woman. "They will always give more importance to their representation while erasing ours."
Another said that it was not just Wilson's, but that the Hollywood public tends to reduce black-run movies to "black" movies, instead of recognizing their contributions to entertainment as a whole.
Mo'Nique even went to the podium to respond to Wilson's remarks. "Do not let this activity erase our talent with gray areas and technical details," said the winner. "Take a moment and know the story. DO NOT BE A PART OF DELETING IT. "
Wilson responded that his intention was not to erase "the achievements of anyone", but others pointed out that it blocked women of color for attempting to facilitate dialogue. There were even people who created hashtags such as #RebelWilsonBlockedMe and #RebelBlockMeParty to commemorate the blocking of the actress.
Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine and Priyanka Chopra are also famous artists. The release of Warner Bros. Pictures is scheduled for February 14th.
