After the big debate about the need to help others or bring more harm, "MM 54" gives hope to viewers something rare in a series that still seems to have been filtered through "Slumber" on Instagram . That the episode responds to this debate that the series has been throughout the season is another question.
The first good news is that we no longer have to refer to the character of Tonya Pinkins as "Filthy Woman", a name that has been attributed to her on the AMC press website. The Broadway star deserves better. Now she has a name that triggers a bond session between Batmen and Supermen … Martha!
She was driving the driver's seat when her car hit a guardrail and fatally injured her husband. Martha, a former English teacher, tried to keep up morale by repeating that "someone will help us, somebody will come", that she continued to pronounce even through her delirium of sorrow. The cars did not stop for them, even if it was located in the middle of the road. Then Martha was forced to watch her husband turn into a walker. She buried him and lost himself amid the voices demanding attention in his mind. By the time someone stopped, a woman named Stevie who was part of Polar Bear's truckers group, Martha was already mentally gone.
While Stevie was busy with the "box to take what you need," Martha remarked, "I do not help people," sign that she blamed herself for her husband's death. She killed Stevie – quickly, savagely – who became his first fellow walker. Martha went down the row of truckers, killing them with the walkers of her past, hoping to hunt down the polar bear. When she acquired Pervis, she went on the walkie of her truck to see if she could denigrate the leader, but instead she got Morgan's voice at the other end, which brings us back to Morgan after storm.
This revelation gives more weight to Martha's confrontation with Morgan after she fired shots at the truck. Nobody dies of this attack. After the first wave, Martha missed the supply of balls from the SWAT van. Wendell's wheelchair is broken by the explosion, but he is still trying to crawl to the side of the truck. Morgan, Luciana, Al and June try to escape, but Al rushes into the van to pick her up and is caught off guard. She hit the floor when the door burst, June finds herself struggling with Martha's last walker and Martha herself keeps the rest at bay under the threat of a gun.
While Morgan tries to convince her, Martha mentions that he will not end up like the rest of his friends because he has "a lot more potential." He then tells her that she is "stuck", which is the same thing that Morgan was stuck when he lost his wife and son. Both were marked by the loss of loved ones, only Morgan's removed from the psychological pit, while Martha, still covered with mud, wallows in the dark.
Do you remember Wendell? He is able to plant a rifle in Martha's chest. She always ends up withdrawing because the truck catches fire and explodes, forcing Sarah and Jim to jump for safety and push the walkers out of the trees.
While Morgan's crew, all injured at the meeting, drag Wendell along the road, Alicia and Charlie find the remains of the truck. The area is littered with motionless walkers that their friends had to face. Now they have to guess where they are, although inside, Alicia does not have the hope of getting a meeting.
Further on the road, more walkers – or "bogies", as Sarah calls them, reporting to Al her naval background [her] services "- join the flock that harasses them slowly. Morgan looks at a sign for a hospital not too far from their path, but Jim panics. He wants to keep running away from things that plan to eat them, but the rest of the group trusts Morgan's instincts. They even plan to leave Jim behind him if he does not want to go, but the terrified beer brewer with seemingly limited survival skills accompanies them.
