As The voiceCoaches started filling their teams on TuesdayI felt anxious. I like the broadcast phase of the series well, and although I'm not crazy about how some auditions for the blind went up to a near-zero level in season 15, that beats the dreaded editing treatment. . In addition, this stage of the competition often gives a good indication of the nerves of competitors who will be problematic later. (I'm looking at you, Reagan Strange.) Nevertheless, I was eager to see some of the competitors we've encountered before. (Kennedy Holmes, for example, Mikele Buck and the human tornado SandyRedd.) Maybe I was more thaneager to go to battle, however, while Night 6 of the Blinds featured at least one singer that I immediately added to my favorites list. Caeland Garner (Team Blake), "Dancing in the Moonlight" – Note: C | A friend of Red Marlow's, the 31-year-old, whose people often sent him $ 20 each time he needed it to move to Nashville, presented a pretty nice cover of Toploader. But coaches seemed to think that it was much better than pleasant. "Your voice is so unique," said Caeland's future coach. "I'm hypnotized by your sound." I was not fascinated – I thought his voice was a little "over there", but I would not rush to change stations on the radio if he passed. Doubt that he has the range to survive the battles.
Lela (Team Jennifer), "Havana" – Grade: B- | Before going on stage, Miami Spitfire, aged 15, told us that she hoped to mix Shakira and Beyonce in her sound. And she was so attractive that I certainly hoped to get there – she had a personality to spare. On stage, she climbed the heat, packing her performance with enough punch to make up for the fact that her voice lacked richness or subtlety. If that will take her beyond battles … eh, not sure. She will need an extra turn to be able to sing in two languages.
Cody Ray Raymond (Team Kelly), "Born Under a Bad Sign" – Note: B | In his pre-interview, Cody came out as a cold, ultra-sensitive rocker. On stage, however, he revealed that he had a somewhat wild side, at least vocally. Not only was his larynx lined with sandpaper, but he seemed to have a fantastic control over the degree of engraving that he displayed on a given line. If I had a problem with him, it was just that I would have liked his stage presence to be as exciting as his voice. WILKES, he was not. (I think Michael Lee will leave it in the dust.)
Jake Wells (Team Adam), "When the stars turn blue" – Note: A- | Traveling around the country with his clan Family partridge the style has apparently served young Jake well. He sang beautifully and, perhaps just as well, in a unique way. As his future coach said, "this guy is different". Even his gesticulations on stage – a combination of spasms and actually feeling the music – were different. Maybe it will collapse later, but I really dug it. He had the first voice tonight that I think I could have chosen in a formation if I heard it again tomorrow.
Abby Cates (Team Kelly), "Scars to Your Beautiful" – Note: C | A character actress for girls' birthday parties, this 17-year-old woman started out strong and was a little suspicious. She sang loudly, as if she wanted to say absolutely every word she was singing. She did not do it as if she had the strongest hold on the reins of her fleeing instrument. I think even a coach as good as Kelly will not be able to put Abby in shape in time to win a battle.
Funsho (Team Adam), "Finesse" – Rating: B + | After learning that this 28-year-old Nigerian had left his post to pursue a musical career in Los Angeles, he went on stage to show us what the sound would look like if Bobby Brown covered Bruno Mars. And it would not sound bad, turns out. There was not a lot of nuance or, ironically, finesse in the performance, but the voice was solid: loud, clear, beautiful voice and works well enough for Kelly to repeat after them. Next time, however, he may want to give us some of the "pleasure" that his name suggested we should be "sho".
