Three minor league players from Cincinnati Reds were involved in a serious car accident in the Dominican Republic on Saturday morning, making one dead and one in critical condition, the team announced Saturday afternoon.
The pitcher Jairo Capellan died of the accident. Pitcher Raul Hernandez is currently in critical condition in a local hospital and outfielder Emilio Garcia is in a stable state, the statement said.
"We have received this terrible news and extend our condolences and support to the families, friends and teammates of Jairo, Raul and Emilio," Reds general manager Bob Castellini said in a statement. "Our Dominican operations are an integral part of the organization of the Reds and this tragedy affects us all. We will remain closely involved to help everyone through this difficult time. "
Capellan, a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, recorded a 2-3 record on the Dominican Reds Reds team and achieved a 6.25 ERA. He played in 18 games in total.
"Jairo was a talented young pitcher with a promising future that was taken away from us much too soon," said Reds field coordinator in Latin America Joe Noboa. "He will be missed by all who knew him – his teammates, his coaches and the staff of our Dominican Academy."
Hernandez recorded a 2-4 record with the team last season, his second with the team, and made a total of 2.29 in 14 games. Garcia had 35 hits in 171 batting goals for the team last season, recording 18 points and 11 RBIs.
The last three MLB players are involved in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in recent years. The Kansas City Royals pitcher, Yordano Ventura, died after a car accident in 2017. The St. Louis Cardinals are hoping that Oscar Taveras was killed in a car accident in 2014, too.
