Red Sox advance to playoffs with victory over Blue Jays

Their post-season has long been a near certainty, but now it's official.

The Boston Red Sox clinched first place in MLB's playoffs with a 7-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.

They also watched Chris Sale, who returned from his second stint on the disabled list with inflammation in the shoulder.

Chris Sale launches 26 throws

It was a brief appearance for Sale, who threw 26 shots in an abbreviated start in a run that allowed him to win two shots while giving up a shot and without throwing. The plan was to sell two rounds and throw a maximum of 40 shots. When he needed 26 lengths in the first, he did not come back for the second.

In search of the best baseball record, the Red Sox have not quite eliminated the New York Yankees for the AL East title. But they will not make a worse place than a wild card after going up to 99-46.

As Yahoo Sports's Mike Oz points out, only two teams in the past 10 years have won the World Series after recording the best record of the game. The Red Sox will seek to reverse the recent history if they maintain this regular rhythm of the season.
