Curt Schilling was honored by the Red Sox before Game 2 of the World Series even though he played a leading role in their 2004 championship run.

David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Kevin Millar, Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek, Keith Foulke and Alan Embree were on hand for a ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park. A Red Sox source told The Boston Globe Dan Shaughnessy the club did not reach out to Schilling, who has been a lightning rod for controversy since his retirement.

Schilling later tweeted that the team did not contact him.

In 2016, Schilling was fired by ESPN, where he was working as an MLB analyst, after he shared and commented on a transphobic social media post. The comment was made in a series of controversial statements made prior to his dismissal.

The right-hander was an integral part of Boston's 2004 title – its first in 86 years – as well as an ankle injury against the Yankees in the ALCS and hurled six strong innings in a World Series win.

The Red Sox honored Schilling the Braves on May 28, 2014, about two years before his exit from ESPN.
