BOSTON – David Price is less than two weeks away from his last attempt at losing his career albatross.
Price, the Boston Red Sox's second likely starter in the American League's playoff series against the New York Yankees and the Oakland A, has a 2-8 life span in the playoffs. But these two victories have been highlighted, where the southpaw has done dynamic work over the years.
There have been discussions – all outward – about Price working again, but he appears to be on the right track to start that second game at Fenway Park on October 6th.
First, some tweaks, with Price against the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a four-game series at Fenway on Tuesday night.
On Monday night, the Red Sox recorded their 106th team victory and grabbed the field advantage throughout the playoffs with a 6-2 victory over Baltimore.
In his last outing, Price, who has more trouble playing at Yankee Stadium than elsewhere, suffered his first defeat since the All-Star break, allowing three homers in five innings and a third against the Yankees.
This has lowered the price to 5-1 since the break.
"I did not make such good shots, especially later in the count," said Price. "I left bullets and they did what you're supposed to do with these lands. Every time you give up a circuit, it's frustrating, but everyone plays in the same park. It's not like fences are falling when they hit or move when they hit. So that's part of it.
Price, 15-7 with a total of 3.53 ERA on the season, is 2-0 against the Orioles this season – two earned runs, 18 strikeouts in 15 innings – and 14-5 with an ERA of 2.67 in 27 starts in career against the Birds.
Nathan Eovaldi, in the opening phase of the fourth game of the ALDS for Boston, was the winner on Monday, saying, "I really think we are the team to beat."
Regarding the club that broke a record in 1912, manager Alex Cora said: "It's unreal. You think about the history of the game and the history of this franchise. To be part of that, I can not even explain it. Obviously, this is something where we should call the timeout and enjoy it.
The Orioles named Jimmy Yacabonis for their departure Tuesday after Monday's loss, their 111th place, linking the St. Louis Browns of 1939 for the most part in franchise history.
