The Boston Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 8-2 on Tuesday afternoon in the third game of the 2018 series of the American League. The Red Sox are now leading the best series in the 2-1 series with two games to play in Houston before the series returns to Boston. Here's what you need to know about Tuesday's game.
Eovaldi writes history near his home town
For those who did not listen to the show, they pointed out that Nathan Eovaldi, the Red Sox starter, had grown about 50 km from Minute Maid Ballpark Stadium in Alvin, Texas. It happens at the house of Nolan Ryan, who works for the Astros and who was behind the plate.
Eovaldi did not have a performance similar to Ryan's, but he did not start quality. He pitched six innings, allowed two runs and two goals on six hits, and then dropped four points. The fastest pitch that Eovaldi launched in the afternoon was 101 mph – yes, 101 mph.
Dallas Keuchel, Eovaldi's counterpart, set up a last-bit similar line: five innings, four hits, two points, two goals, but no indented withdrawal. Oh, and rest assured, he did not reach 101. His best time was 92 mph.
Opening match of the Red Sox against Osuna
Roberto Osuna, closest to the Astros, did not participate in any of the first two games of the series. He entered his third match in the eighth inning to try to keep the Astros inside. He failed – high time. Here is an overview of the play-by-play journal:
It's two outs, three hits, two batter hitters and five points. Ouch.
To make matters worse, Osuna threw 27 shots and forced zero goals. Chances are good, he will recover very well, but the Astros are about to return home because of his bad luck.
Bradley Jr.'s Grand Slam was by the way the fourth in the playoff history by a No. 9 hitter:
It's great.
Pearce offer
It is fair to say that the Red Sox did not expect Steve Pearce to play as much as he did. But with angry Mitch Moreland, Pearce has become an important part of playoff programming – and he is delivered.
In addition to doing some deserving stretches on first base, Pearce hit 0.286 / 0.375 / 0.429 in the ALCS before Tuesday's game. he added to his numbers with a home run who put the Red Sox 3-2:
It was Pearce's first playoff victory. It was a big one, though – and it may not be the last. (Note: Click here to learn more about the rest of the Red Sox's approach against Keuchel.)
Bregman shines again
It would not be an Astros match without Alex Bregman.
Bregman entered the game unhindered in the series – though with a 0.700 OBP thanks to the six-time run in 10 appearances at the plate (he had also been hit by a throw).
Bregman recorded not one, but two hits (the second a "double" that could have been attributed to an error of the third baseman, Rafael Devers) while strolling. Oh, and he has achieved a number of fantastic defensive games, leaving no doubt about the fact that he is a competent defender.
At this point, Bregman is clearly the best player in the Astros – and, beyond that, one of the best players in the game.
Kemp leaps
The most memorable player in the game, Tony Kemp, may have played the game's most memorable game outside of Bregman, in part because Jose Altuve was forced to become DH.
Kemp removed additional bases at Pearce aforementioned, throwing himself against the wall of the left field for a catch:
There was some controversy as to whether the ball hit the wall or not. But after a replay, the referees ruled that Kemp had made the right choice.
Red Sox in good position, historically
With the Red Sox 2-1, it's time to check historical data to see what their chances are of advancing to the World Series. According to the baseball gauge, the host teams that go up 2 to 1 have won 73.9% of the best series of the series. A win in Game 4 would improve the Red Sox's chances by 84.1%. In other words, this is not an imperative for the Astros, but it's close.
And after
The Red Sox and Astros will play the fourth game on Wednesday night. Charlie Morton will take the mound for the Astros, while Rick Porcello will turn to the Red Sox. The game must start at 20:39. ET and will be televised on TBS. You can broadcast on fuboTV (Try it for free).
