MIAMI – The red tide is expected to spread moderately along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida, at least until early next week.

Most of South Florida's beaches were open Friday with warnings about toxic algae.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Friday that swimming enthusiasts may be suffering from mild symptoms such as sneezing, coughing and watering in the Miami area and parts of Panhandle and Tampa Bay Florida.

Outbreaks occur almost annually on the Gulf Coast of Florida, but they are rarely spread in the Atlantic part of the state. The Sun Sentinel reports that hundreds of dead fish were washed away Thursday in Fort Lauderdale.

The red tide started in southwestern Florida last fall. It is responsible for the deaths of many fish and other marine species.
