DETROIT – The slow-starting Detroit Red Wings found their sack of resilience on Monday and threatened to create another enthusiastic return.
This one fell short.
Anthony Mantha scored two goals in the third period, but the Red Wings failed to equalize in the final minutes, sinking 7-5 against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Little Caesars Arena.
Mantha scored his second goal of the game and his ninth of the season with 2:12 to go. But Seth Jones scored in an empty net with 1:31 to play to seal the outcome.
The Red Wings (10-11-3) have no win over three (0-2-1). The Blue Jackets improved to 14-8-2.
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored his second goal of the game at 3:34 of the third period to give the Blue Jackets a 6-4 lead.
It was a strange sequence. Boone Jenner's shot went off roughly and almost crossed the goal line before Jonathan Bernier stopped him. Dubois fired a follow-up shot into the net.
The referee behind the net immediately gave up, but after consulting with other officials, he was allowed to stay up. The Red Wings challenged the goalkeeper's interference in vain.
Mantha had given the Red Wings some hope by scoring 39 seconds after the start of the third period thanks to a back pass from Dylan Larkin, thus reducing Columbus' lead to 5-4.
The Red Wings cleared the deficit by two goals in four of their previous nine games, winning two overtime and two shootout goals.
Gustav Nyquist, Mike Green and Dennis Cholowski also scored for the Red Wings.
The Red Wings lost 3-0 after the first period. Columbus scored three times on 16 shots against Jimmy Howard, replaced by Bernier early in the second.
Nyquist scored the Red Wings on the goals board 44 seconds after the start of the second period with a clever redirection between his skates from a Danny DeKeyser shot.
The Blue Jackets scored twice in 1:38. A turnaround in his own zone by Michael Rasmussen led Marcus Nutivaara's goal at 6:40. Jenner then finished the race against four at two at 6:40 to reach the score of 5-1.
The Red Wings still showed a spark.
Green jumped on a turn and shot Sergei Bobrovsky at 8:05. Cholowski scored on the power play at 17:43 on a shot from the top goal in a Frans Nielsen pass while Rasmussen was in front of goal.
The first period was all Columbus.
Dubois defeated DeKeyser outward, conceded a perfectly placed pass from Antemi Panarin on the scoreboard, cut in front of the net and beaten by Howard.
Josh Anderson scored at 9:51, having pulled out Thomas Vanek's puck in the neutral zone, scored a brace and shot in the penalty shot.
Panarin raised the score to 3-0 on the power play at 16:04 on a shot from the top of the faceoff circle.
