DETROIT (AP) – There was time for a good chance in overtime before the time was up. Andreas Athanasiou took the puck near the blue line, skated inside and returned to the front of the goal, where Dylan Larkin was open.

"I saw the way to the net," Larkin said. "I knew he was going to send it to me, so I just tried to put myself on the opposite side of the net."

Larkin scored with 5.1 seconds to go into overtime, curling an impressive late return to the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers on Friday night. Athanasiou tied the game with 2:02 left in the third period, then made the pass to Larkin, who sent the puck to Henrik Lundqvist for his seventh goal of the season.

"I just watch the clock," said Athanasiou. "The puck was thrown, (Mike Green) screamed to get her up there … I saw Larks and I tried to get her to the net."

The Rangers led 2-0 after two periods, but their four-game winning streak was broken. Detroit has won five of six games after winning one of his first ten games.

Kevin Shattenkirk and Neal Pionk scored 40 seconds back from each other during an extended power play in New York late in the second period, but Justin Abdelkader started the Detroit Rally. with a goal early in the third.

Lundqvist remained a win behind the Hall of Famer Jacques Plante for seventh place on the Career List.

"It hurts because we had everything under control," Lundqvist said.

The Rangers scored twice, while Jacob of the Rose, of Detroit, was serving a double-miner for a tight shot. Shattenkirk beat goalkeeper Jimmy Howard from a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Then, while the Rose was still in the box, Pionk's stunned shot seemed to divert a Detroit player heading inland.

Lundqvist's offer for his first shuttlecock in nearly a year ended with 18:14 remaining in the third. Gustav Nyquist took the puck from Rangers defender Brendan Smith and sent Abdelkader to the door for an easy goal.

"We cheated the game with a 2-0 lead and that 's the result," said Rangers coach David Quinn. "I thought we learned this lesson, but we obviously did not do it, you can not do that in this league."

Athanasiou, back after missing four games due to a lower body injury, had him equalized at the end of the third when he fought back from the left wing and deflected the puck beyond Lundqvist.

"A lot of speed, I knew I could step in," said Athanasiou. "I became addicted, I was able to recover the puck and I was able to simulate Lundqvist."

The Red Wings also fell 2-0 before coming together to beat Vancouver in a shootout on Tuesday.

"We have to play the first period with the same urgency as in the third period," said Detroit coach Jeff Blashill.

NOTES: Mats Zuccarello (strain at the groin) missed the match for New York. … Rose went off with a wound on her upper body. … with Brett Howden, Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil, the Rangers had three strikers aged 20 and under in the same regular season game for the first time since October 13, 1990, when in Washington. … It was the 12th time in 13 games between Detroit and New York that the game was decided by a goal.
