The Washington Redskins have traded for Green Bay Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix for a 2019 fourth-round pick, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

The team’s defense has been one of the best in the league in 2018, but decided to add another talented safety next to D.J. Swearinger, giving the Redskins one of the best tandems at the position in the league. Pro Football Focus graded Swearinger as the second-best safety in the league this season behind Earl Thomas, who suffered a season-ending injury. Clinton-Dix (6-foot-1, 208 pounds) was ranked third.

Clinton-Dix is in the final year of his rookie deal after the Packers picked up his fifth-year option for 2018. He was the No. 21 overall pick in 2014 out of Alabama, and made the Pro Bowl in 2016 when he had five interception and 79 tackles. He had 100-plus tackles in his first two seasons and has not missed a single game during his five-year career. Clinton-Dix has 27 tackles, three interceptions, one sack and one forced fumble in 2018, and had started every game for the Packers since his second season in 2015.

He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

The addition brings another former member of the Alabama Crimson Tide to Washington. Defensive linemen Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen were first-round picks out of the school the last two seasons. Linebackers Ryan Anderson and Shaun Dion Hamilton and practice squad receiver Cam Sims are also products of Alabama.

Clinton-Dix will likely replace Montae Nicholson in the starting lineup, who was bumped up to first team this year after being a fourth-round pick in 2017. The Redskins have been relatively vulnerable through the air this season, allowing 242 passing yards per game — 13th-best in the league. Their run defense has been a bigger strength, as it has allowed the second-fewest yards per game in the NFL.
