NEW ORLEANS – The Redskins enter Week 5 at the top of the NFC Eastern standings and a win against the New Orleans Saints Monday night Football can consolidate their first place in the division for at least a week.
But a victory against the Saints will not be easy. Drew Brees will set records against the Redskins.
He only needed 201 yards to become the all-time NFL leader and four touchdown passes to reach the 500th rank.
The Redskins failed in their quest to defeat the Saints in 2017, dropping 34-31 in overtime despite a 15-point lead. But it's a different team than the Redskins. The defense is considerably improved.
Will they do it at week 5?
Here's a quarterly report of the good, bad and bad things that happened in the Redskins-Saints game tonight.
Redskins vs. Saints: good, bad and ugly
FIRST QUARTER:
GOOD: The second command of the Redskins was much better than the first. He started with a pass for Davis for a first run, then Maurice Harris got his first catch of the season, a pass that was good for six yards. After Peterson scored the first goal with a four-yard run, he checked up on Peterson who turned the game into a 12-yard gain.
A bag nearly blocked the player, but Smith was able to save time and find Chris Thompson for a 17-point win against 30 for the Saints. Smith cut the gap by a third with a hurtful ball to Paul Richardson.

But a third bag on the floor ended the race and the Redskins had to settle for a goal.
WRONG: The first set of Redskins went nowhere. Alex Smith went away and incomplete for Maurice Harris, then short and incomplete for Adrian Peterson, then Jamison Crowder full and short of stick. To top it off, there was a false start from five yards on the flat. Not what they needed to counter a noisy Superdome crowd.
UGLY: In the first possession of New Orleans, it seems that the Redskins have eliminated the Saints by three points, but a yellow flag has allowed them to regain a new life.
Then Brees went to Thomas for 20 meters in Washington territory. A screen shot for Mark Ingram was 28 yards. In the next game, Ingram came into play and the Saints took a 6-0 lead. The only good thing was that the Saints missed the extra point.
SECOND QUARTER:
GOOD: The Saints were trying to overtake the clock at the end of the half but Fabian Moreau forced a fumble that Pernell McPhee recovered and returned to the Saints 16-yard line. After a 13-yard pass to Jamison Crowder, Alex Smith scored on a quarterback draw.
WRONG: Ryan Kerrigan had his first bag of the season when he had Brees for an eight-yard loss. However, the Saints kept the ball once the security was over. Montae Nicholson pushed Mark Ingram to the ground well after the whistle. Just a silly piece of Nicholson. It proved expensive because the Saints quickly scored on a touchdown pass from Brees to Josh Hill.
UGLY: The defense of the Redskins as a whole. Of the first four possessions of the Saints in the first half, they gave up 264 yards and four touchdowns.
THIRD QUARTER:
GOOD: Towards the end of the third quarter, the Redskins made a good start. It is no coincidence that a pass for Jordan Reed was a key element of the lead. He had 21 yards in his first game reception to move the ball to the Saints' territory. He would have set up a field test, but as the Redskins had lost 27 points, they had to start fourth and 10th. Alex Smith lost a fumble and that was all.
WRONG: Alex Smith's fourth downhill pass was shot by Justin Hardee, who gave 77 yards to four yards. Smith was heading to his right and he did not miss the ball enough and Hardee had an easy choice. The Saints have turned it into another touchdown.
UGLY: The Redskins' defense was completely calm as they left the locker room after half-time. Brees and the Saints played five games, 74 yards and one touchdown. They just did what they wanted to do.
FOURTH TRIMESTER:
GOOD: A fourth and two complements to Thompson helped get the Redskins on the board in the fourth quarter. Passes to Jamison Crowder and Maurice Harris earned 24 and 33 yards to allow Kapri Bibbs to dive a goal by the pass.
WRONG: Smith made his second quarter of the second half business figure. He returned to pass and was immediately invaded. The ball jumped into the air and the saints recovered to set up a goal. Like the first, it was all Smith's fault, but it did not make the game look better.
UGLY: The game.
