Reduce processed meat to reduce risk

[ad_1]

According to new research, processed meat has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Regular consumption of bacon and sausages could increase your chances of contracting the disease by 9%, compared to those who consume small amounts of these foods, it was reported.

These results corroborate previous World Health Organization (WHO) studies linking consumption of processed meats and higher cancer incidence rates.

The processed meat has been modified to change its taste – by smoking or curing – or to extend its shelf life by adding preservatives or extra salt.

Examples include sausages, hot dogs, dried beef, salted beef, canned meat, bacon and salami.

If the research is correct, high consumption of processed meat would increase the risk of breast cancer in women by 9%.

Men can also develop breast cancer, with between 350 and 400 cases each year, according to the NHS.

Prevention of breast cancer

Cancer Research reports on its website that nearly a quarter (23% as well) of breast cancer cases could be prevented.

While many are simply unlucky, the website predicts that 8% of cases are caused by being overweight and obese, while 8% are related to alcohol consumption.

Other risk factors include lack of breastfeeding (5%), postmenopausal hormones (2%) and oral contraceptives (less than 1%).
