WASHINGTON – Recalled more than 132,000 pounds of ground beef from Cargill Meat Solutions Wednesday due to possible E. coli contamination after the death of one person and 17 people who felt sick.
According to a company press release, ground beef products were produced and packaged on June 21, 2018. Deaths and illnesses occurred from July 5 to July 25.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service has expressed concern that customers have frozen contaminated meat in their freezers and advises customers to check whether their ground beef could be part of this recall.
The USDA considers this a high-risk situation.
FSIS was informed of the investigation conducted by E. coli on 16 August. FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and other partners in public health and agriculture found that beef was probably the source of disease.
The ground beef products, manufactured and packaged on June 21, bear the number "EST". 86R "printed inside the USDA inspection mark.
This recall comes on the heels of a previous recall of Cargill Meat Solutions ground beef for E. coli, announced on August 23, for a single potentially contaminated product:
- 10 lb Chubs of "EXCEL 93/7 FINE GRIND BEEF GROUND" with "Use / Frz. Before September 5 "on the label of the chub and a" PACK DATE 16/08/2018 "on the box label.
At that time, no adverse effects had been reported.
