Warning: Spoilers of "Creed II" coming soon. (Also for "Rocky II" and "Rocky IV", but you've had plenty of time to watch them.)
The critical and commercial success of "Creed", which re-energized the "Rocky" franchise, made many of the moviegoers in the Michael B. Jordan-directed film unfamiliar with Sylvester Stallone's boxing universe. However, the 2015 film directed by Ryan Coogler has found a balance between tribute and freshness, so that the public can appreciate the rise of Adonis Creed, Jordan, without knowing much about the previous films of "Rocky".
But "Creed II" looks a lot like a sequel to "Rocky". Although the characters say enough about the past to put you in context, much of the film is a massive reminder to the original films.
The series "Creed" comes from the events of "Rocky IV". In the 1985 installment, Apollo Creed died in a clash with Ivan Drago, the man-made iron pillar. Rocky Balboa, who was in the corner of Apollo, is riddled with guilt and decides to fight Draco. Not only does he win, but in a post-match speech, he puts an end to the cold war?
Today, the son of Apollo, Adonis, still lives under the weight of the tragic death of his legendary father. In "Creed II", he has the opportunity to fight Viktor Drago, Ivan's son.

Why even disturb?
Before his first fight with Viktor, Adonis tells Rocky that he at take the fight, that he has no choice. Rocky reminds Adonis that his father said the same thing, then died in Rocky's hands.
This is true! In "Rocky IV", a young Rocky tries to dissuade Apollo from taking the show match. In "Creed II", Adonis takes revenge in Moscow. In both films, Americans receive a rather hostile reception.

Let's have the buff
This is not a "Rocky" movie without some crazy training fixtures. This time, Adonis goes to what we call hell to train for his big fight. (We do not know why a desert climate is the ideal climate, but it is extreme and the drive is usually miserable, so why not?) Adonis stays in a rotten hut and performs inefficient and arduous tasks, such as digging a gap in the desert landscape by hammering the ground with a mass. But while Adonis fights with one foot in a spare wheel, Viktor trains in a gym with dumbbells and battle ropes.
All this reflects the training of "Rocky IV". In this sequel, Rocky goes to the Russian nature, where it is extremely cold – Are extreme weather conditions useful for boxing preparation? Can any one please advise? – and stay in a dilapidated cabin. He summons his representatives by raising carriages, shooting down trees and climbing mountains. For his part, Ivan is hooked on what has become a high-tech equipment of the 1980s, works on treadmills and uses pedal machines. (However, Ivan seems to be doping, while Viktor does not understand drug use.)

Turn the towel around your head, like a helicopter
Much of the drama in these boxing movies revolves around the towel. Yes, it can absorb blood and sweat, but by throwing a rag into the ring, you can stop a fight and potentially save a life!
In "Rocky IV", Apollo refuses to let Rocky throw the sponge "whatever happens". The decision not to go against the wish of Apollo ends up killing the boxer and Rocky is still haunted by his choice. In "Creed II", Rocky, who refused to coach Adonis for his first fight against Viktor, watches the game on TV and asks the coach to throw the sponge. But in the second fight, Rocky, who has now formed Adonis, does not need to throw in the towel. The big twist here is that Ivan everyone does it, saving their son from a useless beating.
How are the films different?
"Creed II" stands out from "Rocky IV" decisively.
The older film, which takes place in the middle of the Cold War, is both personal and political. Ivan, an avatar of Soviet evil, has no redemptive quality. The Soviets led it as a killing machine. Russians and threatening state advocates remind the audience how the government can be oppressive. Apollo draws his fight from some of the feeling of patriotism by saying, "It's not just a demonstration fight. It's about us against them. "
In "Creed II", there is no America against the Russians dynamic. Viktor was raised by his father, bitter and scorned after his wife and countrymen abandoned him following his own defeat. Both live a pretty miserable existence. So, while you fear Viktor Drago, you end up feeling pretty bad for him.
Oh, and another difference? In "Rocky IV", there is a great robot character. Why, we have no idea. Fortunately, there is no robot in "Creed II". (Unless you count Jordan's abs, which also seems to have been made in a workshop.)
