Renault's EZ-Pro is the strangest driverless vehicle you've ever seen

It looks scary and strange, and is designed to knock on your door.

French automaker Renault SA unveiled Wednesday the EZ-Pro, a self-driving vehicle of the future that will deliver food to your home late at night or packages to your office during the day.

The big gray robot that moves on square wheels is a concept that should arrive on the roads around 2030. Although it does not need a driver, the EZ-Pro will have a concierge to help you distribute the orders online.

According to Renault, with the side flaps that open like a food truck, the design of the vehicle was inspired by the appearance of a lunch box. With an impressive length of 16 feet and a width of 7 feet, the builder believes that it could still move in most European cities.

Passenger coaches often include reassuring lights, sounds and comfortable seating. For its part, the EZ-Pro seems downright utilitarian.

"In the case of delivery vehicles, the personal touch will be mainly in the applications that users will use rather than in the vehicle," said Renault's chief designer, Laurens van den Acker.

General Motors Co. plans to launch robotics as early as next year and startups like the French company Navya are already selling driverless cars. Renault plans to equip some of its passenger vehicles with autonomous functions from 2020.
