TAMPA, Fla. – The deadly crash of Tuesday in Interstate 75 in Tampa continues to pose a problem Wednesday morning.
Interstate 75 reopened early Wednesday, but the ramp connecting I-75 southbound to Fowler Avenue is still closed.
Heading East Fowler Ave. remains closed but the westbound lanes are open.
The teams performed technical tests on the pavement after the accident investigation and cleaning.
On Tuesday, a violent chain shock pushed a tractor trailer onto I-75 and spilled on Fowler.
The accident occurred just after 4 pm when the driver of a sport utility vehicle entered the ramp northbound from Fowler Avenue towards the airport. I-75, lost control of the vehicle and rotated on northbound lanes.
The vehicle entered the semitrailer passage and the two vehicles collided. The collision sent the semitrailer into the central median of the roadway and the dam wall along the Fowler Avenue overpass.
The tractor portion of the semi-trailer passed over the barrier wall and drove to Fowler Avenue, where it landed on a third vehicle. The trailer continued along the barrier until it hit Fowler and was hit by a fourth vehicle.
The tractor, still at the top of the third vehicle, then caught fire and burned for more than 20 minutes. The trailer was stopped in all lanes of Fowler Avenue, spilling its load of tomatoes on the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle on which the tractor fell sustained fatal injuries in the accident, according to FHP. The occupants of the other vehicles were all transported to hospitals in the area with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation and cleaning of the Florida Highway Patrol took place during the night and early hours of the morning.
The authorities have not yet announced when all roads would reopen.
