Google has signed real estate agreements in New York that would give room for nearly 20,000 workers. This includes the acquisition or lease of a 1.3 million square foot building in the West Village neighborhood, which is expected to be completed by 2022.
NEW YORK (AP) – Google is planning a major expansion in New York, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper reported Wednesday that the company planned to add space for more than 12,000 additional workers in New York. The Journal quoted anonymous people familiar with the plans.
According to the newspaper, Google has entered real estate agreements in New York that would give room for nearly 20,000 workers. This includes the acquisition or lease of a 1.3 million square foot building in the West Village neighborhood, which is expected to be completed by 2022.
A Google spokesman said the company had no comment to make on the newspaper's report. The announced enrollment expansion for Google would be close to the 25,000 employees Seattle-based Amazon would consider moving to Long Island City, New York, as part of its own high-profile search for new offices.
Amazon has also added another 25,000 jobs to Crystal City, in northern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.
New York and Washington, along with other large cities with highly skilled groups of workers, research universities, and other successful technology companies, are increasingly in demand as companies like Google and Amazon are growing.
This creates a positive feedback loop that benefits these municipalities and concentrates opportunities to risk leaving other regions of the country behind.
