Local police in Saint John also consulted Twitter, urging residents to "avoid the area" as it closed the streets near the refinery.

The refinery can produce more than 320,000 barrels of energy products a day, according to the Saint John-based Irving Web site. The factory opened in 1960 on a site of 780 acres and employs more than 1,400 people.
