Heather Nauert, spokeswoman for the state department, would have been tasked to replace Nikki Haley as US ambassador to the United Nations.
Fox News announced Thursday, as a result of information from a "senior administration official," that President Trump had extended the offer.
Nauert, who was a Fox News host before joining the State Department, would have little experience in the field of external relations but is held in high esteem by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
According to CNN, she was also among those likely to replace the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who, according to some, should leave her post in the coming months.
Haley, whose resignation was announced last month, will leave his position by the end of the year.
