SHAW, Miss. – A woman is in detention after authorities announced that a girl had been stabbed and then placed in a hot oven in a house in Shaw, Mississippi.
The girl's grandmother, Carolyn Jones, aged 48, has been charged with first degree murder, said Bolivar County Sheriff Kevin Williams. His bond was set at $ 500,000.
Williams said that a member of the girl's family had found her body and called the police at the Shaw home on Martin Luther King Drive at around 7 pm. On Monday. Police announced they had summoned Bolivar County MPs when they found the 20-month-old girl dead in the heated oven. He said that the girl lived at home, although they never responded to the address for past criminal incidents.
"While the official cause of death is still under investigation, the authorities have reason to believe that the child was stabbed and burned," Williams said.
The body was sent to the state's crime lab in Jackson for an autopsy, Williams said.
Neighbors like Earlean Carter came out when blue lights surrounded the house on Monday night.
"It shocked everyone," Carter said. "I thought the house was empty. I did not know that nobody lived there. "
Bands of crime scenes and children's toys littered the backyard Tuesday as investigators from the Mississippi Investigation Bureau took pictures and looked for evidence in the yard.
Many in the small town said they were shocked and upset.
"How can you make a child like this? They are innocent," Wesley Nichols said.
"It hurts. I do not like talking about this stuff, "said a woman.
