The Republicans suffered a further setback in California on Tuesday as Jeff Denham was removed from office after four terms in a district representing a field of farmland in the Central Valley.
He was beaten by his Democratic opponent, Josh Harder, according to the Associated Press. Mr. Harder's advance increased over the last week and the last update on Tuesday night gave him 4,919 votes in front, a margin Mr. Denham could not make up for.
Mr. Harder's victory over an entrenched Republican is the latest sign of this year's Democratic force in California and the country. The Democrats decided to overthrow up to seven California Republicans in Hillary Clinton districts in 2016 but in which registered Republicans outnumbered registered Democrats.
The loss of Mr. Denham to Mr. Harder, a venture capital investor, was the fourth upset by a California Democrat.
Two key congressional competitions in the state remained too close to be followed. In the 45th district, representative Mimi Walters, Republican of Orange County, takes up the challenge launched by Katie Porter, a Democrat. And in the 39th district, a Republican, Young Kim, seeks to fill the vacancy left by another representative, Ed Royce, representative of the County of Orange. Democratic candidate Gil Cisneros opposes Kim.
With the victory of Mr. Harder, the Democrats won 33 seats in the House and should win between 35 and 40 seats once the count is over.
