The sheriff's deputies were preparing Wednesday night to rescue a man jailed for two days in a mine shaft in western Arizona, authorities said.

The man fell into the well Monday but was not discovered until Wednesday by a "good Samaritan", the Maricopa County Sheriff Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said on Twitter.

A medical helicopter was on the scene near Aguila, about 80 km northwest of Phoenix, after the authorities brought down a doctor in the well to monitor the man, Enriquez said. The wounds of the man were not clear, but Enriquez described him as being alert and talking.

No other details, including the identity of the man or the way he fell into the pit of the mine, were immediately available.
