A new federal report finds that climate change is affecting the natural environment, agriculture, energy production and use, land and water resources, transportation, human health and wellbeing. United States and its territories.
Volume II of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4), released November 23, 2018 by the US Climate Change Research Program (USGCRP – http://www.globalchange.gov/about), is dedicated to impacts, risks and adaptations in the United States. The report contains evidence supporting 16 national chapters (water, oceans, energy and human health), 10 regional chapters and two chapters on society's responses to climate change. USGCRP has also published the second report on the state of the carbon cycle (SOCCR2 – https://carbon2018.globalchange.gov/).
NOAA is one of 13 federal agencies that have made significant contributions to the fourth national climate assessment.
Key Findings of the NCA4, Vol. II communities
-
The health and safety of people, our quality of life and the rate of economic growth of communities across the United States are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
-
The cascading effects of climate change threaten the natural, built and social systems we rely on, both within and beyond the country's borders.
-
Society's efforts to address climate change have intensified over the last five years, but not to the extent necessary to avoid significant damage to the economy, the environment and human health in the next decades.
-
Without substantial and sustained global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and regional initiatives to prepare for the anticipated changes, climate change is expected to result in increasing losses of infrastructure and assets in the United States and hinder the rate of economic growth during this century.
Agriculture and food production
-
Rising temperatures, extreme heat, drought, wildfires on rangelands and heavy showers are expected to increasingly jeopardize the quality and quantity of agricultural yields, livestock health, prices and livelihoods in rural areas.
Ecosystems
- Ongoing changes in the Earth's climate will result in major disturbances in some ecosystems. Some coral reef and pack ice ecosystems are already experiencing transformational changes that affect communities and the economies that depend on them.
Water and ribs
-
Changes in the quality and quantity of fresh water available for humans and the environment increase the risks and costs for agriculture, energy production, energy efficiency and energy efficiency. 39, industry and recreation.
-
Climate change will transform coastal regions by the end of the century and impact other regions and sectors. Many communities should expect higher costs and lower property values with sea level rise.
Health
-
Climate change threatens the health and well-being of the American people by causing increasingly severe weather conditions, changes in air quality, the spread of new diseases caused by insects and diseases. parasites, as well as changes in the availability of food and water.
