Researchers develop biomedical data analysis tool in minutes

Researchers at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine have developed a tool to accelerate the analysis and publication of biomedical data from months or years to just minutes, transforming the way researchers communicate results of their studies. Until now, the main method available for sharing biomedical research data was a print publication in scientific journals. The new tool, BioJupies, leverages cloud technologies to analyze and visualize large amounts of data, such as those acquired through genome sequencing, described in the November 2018 issue of Cellular systems.

RNA sequencing is the most commonly used experimental method for profiling cells in biomedical research. In recent years, sequencing technology has revolutionized the way scientists examine genetic data, and this advancement plays a crucial role in the discovery and development of drugs. Traditionally, RNA sequencing analysis requires extensive computer programming skills and access to high performance local computing facilities, which slows the rate at which biomedical data can be analyzed, shared and published.

With the creation of BioJupies, users can now download and analyze their RNA sequencing data in a fraction of the time, as before. The platform uses a cloud computing pipeline that reduces the cost of processing RNA sequencing data to less than one penny per sample. BioJupies also produces a comprehensive, open source interactive report based on the processed data, which allows for the extraction, re-analysis and reuse of 300,000 publicly available RNA sequencing data sets to strengthen biomedical research. .
