J.J. The horror film of the Abrams play Suzerain Most critics have suffered from some slowness in the second act, but most critics have enjoyed exploring a movie B concept with a budget and an A-list run. Blending the classic aesthetic of war movies with body horror themes and good old-fashioned monster movies, Julius Avery created a film whose story invites to Wolfenstein video games while being something original, unlike what Hollywood has never done before.
Located just before the invasion of Normandy, Suzerain center on a team of paratroopers who are thrown into Nazi-occupied France to turn off a radio tower on a local church in anticipation of D-Day. They soon discover that the church contains much more than a tower radio and find themselves facing the creations of a Nazi scientist, who was given free rein to turn his captives into super soldiers for the Third Reich. Naturally, instead of a Nazi version of Captain America, the scientist creates Lovecraftian abominations and it is up to the soldiers to accomplish their mission while preventing unholy monsters from escaping captivity.

The film premiered at Fantastic Fest in anticipation of its release in November. Most critics praised Suzerain for his commitment to his premise, as well as not to shy away from portraying the violence of war or the fantasies of Nazi experiences. They also praised the film for its ability to combine two seemingly disparate genres and to perfectly imitate war movies and horror films. Combining some of the spirit of the Nazisploitation class with a prominent young cast and more solid-than-life film production, the film is more general than midnight seems on paper, if only slightly. Horror fans should encourage, just like fans of the rising cast from the set.

Combining the primordial fear of a horror movie and the intensity of a war movie's action is a difficult mix, but Avery does it remarkably well …, with heroes that are worthy of to be prized, bad guys to whistle and monsters to tremble. It's a gas explosion and a fun race.
Jonathan Barkan (no stars) – Dread Central
Loaded to the brim with action, heavy practical effects and rapture, Overlord is undoubtedly thrilling with really exhilarating footage … Overlord gave me exactly what I wanted. Tight, fun, vicious and overflowing with practice, you'll be hard pressed to find a film that is so bloody bloody this year.
Haleigh Foutch (B) – collider
The biggest criticism I can make about Overlord is that he seems reluctant to fully engage in the monster, oscillating between the glory of movie B and a soldier's story. There are fabulously awesome practical effects frills and disgusting mad scientist drawings, but only tastes, never a whole meal.
Matt Donato (8/10) – SlashFILM
Overlord is not Call Of Duty: the Nazi zombies … the movie, for the better. The blistering reenactments of the Second World War are just as impressive as the inhuman bioengineers of Axis that make Gordon look astonishing. Do not expect waves of zombies to come out the door, and Julius Avery takes his time arming Hitler's 1,000-year-old Army, but patience brings its reward. Large scale French production drawings, looking for fingers, supernatural, denied the investment in a concept torn by the dreams of genre fans – that's why horror fans go At the movie theater. Bold ideas, a blackened execution and a fighting spirit that spits at the feet of the enemy. With the Nazi zombies.
Kaleyn Corrigan (B +) – IndieWire
"Overlord" invites low expectations and happily elevates them above them. Yes, this is a B movie produced with studio resources on American soldiers fighting Nazi zombies during World War II. But despite some underdeveloped characters and obvious tropes of B-movie, "Overlord" exceeds the call of duty with a captivating story that digs much further than what this material is usually doing.
Despite the feeling that Suzerain not fully committed to his premise, Foutch praised the film for having a strong sub-plot about the ethics of armed conflict and whether or not the lines must be crossed against untold evils. Yet many critics have emphasized the second act – in which soldiers discuss what to do after discovering what to do – as the weakest part of the film. There were also many complaints about too much time spent on a Nazi scientific intrigue because of the way it seemed pointless, serving no more than to show one more reason.
These complaints are rare, however, and Suzerain until here have been more positive than negative. Fans of horror movies will be delighted with the practical effects and the level of gore used in the representation of monsters and those intended for them. War buffs will likely enjoy the classic "behind enemy lines" formula and the level of execution of action sequences, ignoring the fact that soldiers shoot big monsters with the Nazis. The usual movie buffs will appreciate it as a unique curiosity, to liven up the season of holiday movies.
