Rhode Island is suing several major oil companies, accusing them of contributing to climate change that damages infrastructure and coastal communities in the state.
The lawsuit supports companies – including Exxon (NYSE: XOM), BP, Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX) – have sought to refute scientific discoveries about how whose pollution caused by greenhouse gases caused climate change and did not stop consumers from using fossil fuels
The Rhode Island trial follows similar cases in US cities and local governments, including that of San Francisco and Oakland, which was rejected last week by a US District Judge
