SANTA CLARA – Two weeks ago, the 49ers recruited seven quarterbacks after Jimmy Garoppolo injured his knee late in the season.
While Tom Savage and Matt Simms seem to be quarterbacks, the 49ers would strongly regard him as number 3 behind CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens, the relief team, but the team has shifted towards the race to the race Monday.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers had brought a group of halfbacks to the training. Matt Breida had doubts about his ability to play Monday against the Green Bay Packers.
Shanahan confirmed that Breida was not suffering from a sprained ankle, but he described the injury as "still a serious sprain". Breida suffered a sprain in the middle of the ankle, said a source at NBC Sports Bay Area. He may not be available to play at week 6.
"It's better news than expected, but it's still not good news," Shanahan said. "We will see the next two days."
Veteran Alfred Morris is the only other real running back on the 49ers list. Back # 3, Raheem Mostert, is mainly a special team player who missed his first postponement Sunday in the 28-18 loss of the 49ers against the Arizona Cardinals.
Jeremy McNichols, who spent last season on the training squad, was eliminated this summer after training camp. The 49ers do not seem to have the interest of bringing back Joe Williams, a fourth round pick of 2017 who spent last season on the injured reserve and who was cut before the start of the regular season this year.
The 49ers will also consider promoting unprepared rookie Jeff Wilson on the coaching team, Shanahan said.
The 49ers have not decided to sign a # 3 quarterback because of injury problems at other positions. After all, any quarterback added at this point would likely be used by the scouting team at other posts, such as wide receiver and security, until the player is substituted instead of Beathard or Mullens.
"I see a similar situation now as last week," Shanahan said. "We talk about it every Monday."
Wide receiver Dante Pettis (knee) will not play Green Bay, said Shanahan. The 49ers do not know if the receiver Marquise Goodwin (hamstring / thigh) will be available. Joe Staley, Weston Richburg and Mike Person, all with knee injuries, also have injury problems on the offensive line.
George Kittle (knee) and Garrett Celek (quadriceps), defensive back Richard Sherman (calf) and Jimmie Ward (hamstring) and linebacker Reuben Foster (shoulder) could also be limited in training.
