Prostate cancer can often be detected quickly in men through a simple blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in the blood.
The Rome Memorial Hospital offers free PSA screening for men 50 years and older, Monday through Friday, September 24-28. The blood for the test can be taken from one of the laboratories affiliated with Rome Memorial Hospital:
- Rome Memorial Hospital From 6am to 5pm
- Medical Group of Rome from 7h to 17h
- Chestnut tree from 7h to 15h30
- Boonville Family Care 8am to noon
- Camden Family Care From 7am to 3.30pm
"Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men over 50," said Dr. Michael Fallon, a licensed radiation oncology specialist at Rome Memorial Hospital. "As with all cancers, early detection can lead to better results."
"In conjunction with a digital rectal examination, a simple blood test – the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) – is an important component in the evaluation and treatment of prostate cancer," continued Dr. Fallon. If you are interested in learning more about prostate cancer and the role of the PSA test in the screening and management of prostate cancer, please contact your attending physician or radiotherapy at the Memorial Hospital of Rome for more information. "Radiation Therapy at the Rome Memorial Hospital is committed to providing exceptional care to cancer patients in Rome and surrounding rural areas," said Amy Weakley, RT (T) director, CMD, BS. "We are pleased to offer our community access to a variety of cancer screening tests, as early detection offers patients the best treatment options and can save lives.
"Under Dr. Fallon's leadership, our staff provides comprehensive and compassionate radiotherapy services. Since daily treatments often last eight to nine weeks, our patients appreciate the convenience of receiving radiation therapy near their homes, "said Weakley.
