BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Recreational molluscan fishing will be completed in federal and federal waters off the Atlantic and southern Gulf coasts of Florida on November 1st.
This closure includes all state waters south of Cape Sable, which is on the Gulf of Florida side, and along the Atlantic coast. The Keys / East Florida hogfish fishing season runs from May 1st to October 31st.
The recreational fishery remains open in federal and federal waters north of Cape Sable in the Gulf.
Hogfish is a species commonly targeted by many harpoon and reef fishermen and is highly regarded by many for its taste and nutritional value. In 2007, hogfish landings in Florida totaled 306,953 pounds.
Fish stocks are regulated by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Bag, size and equipment limitations have been imposed on this species to ensure the health of its stock and protect it from overfishing.
