Bucharest, Romania – According to health authorities, mosquito-borne viruses killed four people in Romania this week, bringing to 21 the total number of deaths from West Nile virus.
The National Institute of Public Health reported Friday 30 new cases of people sick after being bitten by mosquitoes carrying the virus. He said that all deaths involved people with other health complications.
The first deaths were recorded in August and the virus rendered 200 sick people throughout Romania.
The health ministry has urged local authorities to take steps to prevent the spread of West Nile virus, adding that the threat will diminish as the weather warms up.
He also advised the public to take preventive measures such as the use of repellents, wearing long sleeves and covering windows with nets.
The virus is transmitted by the bites of infected mosquitoes.
